Ursus arctos (Brown or Grizzly Bear)

Habitat: Open areas and grasslands. Habits: The Brown Bear is similar to the Black Bear, but it cannot climb trees like the Black Bear. They do not hibernate but are torpid during the colder months of the year; during this time they metabolize fat that was stored during the summer and fall. They often leave their dens during warm spells. Brown Bears are omnivores. The Brown Bear used to be found in the Wichita Mountains and the Black Mesa, but this species now is extinct in Oklahoma.
