| Onychomys leucogaster (Northern Grasshopper Mouse) |
|||||||
Habits: The Northern Grasshopper Mouse or wolf mouse uses various high-pitched whistles or peeps in territorial and social behavior. One frequent cry is emitted with the mouth open and the nose raised and pointing up, in a manner similar to coyotes or wolves. This in part has led to its colloquial name. Grasshopper mice are more carnivorous than most small rodents. Their diet varies from insects, scorpions, various small mammals, and seeds in the spring, summer, and early fall to plants and an occasional small mammal in the winter. |
